The Great Impersonation Customer Reviews
:- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Steve -- feeble : I thought the novel started reasonably well. But once the main character reemerged in England the story became laden with ludicrous characters (the wife) and idiotic subplots (the ghost of the woods). I don't think it too much to ask that even a hundred year old spy novel be coherent and believable. Compare this novel (1920) with John Buchan's "The Thirty-Nine Steps" (1915). Wiki cites this as Oppenheim's best. Perhaps, but I'm not going to check the assertion. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2020 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Entertaining, but too slow in many parts : An absolutely wild ride, the main twist was a little easy to guess, but I still had a few surprises at the end. Interesting from both the perspective of being fairly contemporaneous to its world war one content, and also from the sheer pulpiness of the plot. - 3.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Different : I found this book far from realistic. It has a turn to it but not believable. I'm glad I read it but it wasn't that good. I don't think I would want to recommend it to anyone, but I'm sure there are others who would enjoy it. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from G. Allen -- Is he or isn't he? : What I love most about this book is the way Oppenheim manages to keep you guessing until the very end. There are subtle clues throughout the book but unless you know what to look for you won't notice them until the 2nd or 3rd reading. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2014 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from A lover of books -- Good : Like the Prince of Sinners, by the same author, the story gets better as it goes along. But unlike the other book, I liked the end with its twist. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from JaneS -- Get Acquainted With This Classic Mystery Novel : This is one of my favorite older books. I have read it 2-3 times just because I like the characters and the plot so much. It is a classic about hidden identity. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2017 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from The Squirrel -- Well written, love & duty : I generally like Oppenheim. Especially his novels set during or leading up to the Great War. An interesting resolution as the main character must play the role of another man in the pursuit of espionage and love. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- great book! : I first read this years ago and loved it then!! I reread it recently and still love it. An Englishman and a German meet in Africa before World War 1. They look almost alike in appearance so the German plans to kill the Englishman and take his place in England. Throughout the entire book, it is not clear if the German actually succeeded- or is the English man actually pretending to be the German (who is pretending to be the English man!) - 5.0 out of 5 stars from pcock -- A blast from the past. : I first read this book over 50 years ago and loved it so much I must have read it 5 or 6 times. I came across it again recently and couldn’t wait to read it again. The language is dated, the story predictable and certainly not very politically correct but I still loved it!! - 4.0 out of 5 stars from olive reader -- Four Stars : old but great book spy/adventure story. Keeps you wondering till the end. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 27, 2017 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Officer Dibble -- Edwardian stiff upper lip spy story : This was written after the Great War in 1920 but based the period leading up to outbreak of war in August 1914. It therefore has the benefit of an almighty dollop of hindsight. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 7, 2009 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Dog walker -- Great old penny dreadful : I thoroughly enjoyed this curious old book. The central plot device is brilliant even though not really hard to see through. The characterisation is pretty wooden (we’re not talking DH Lawrence here) and yet the thing zings along. This book got me handsomely through a bad case of flu. It is thoroughly racist when it comes to Africa but I guess that reflects the times. Apart from that, a great read. ( Reviewed in Australia on July 22, 2019 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from R K Mitra -- Three Stars : Good book. However the twist in the endcould be guessed. ( Reviewed in India on November 15, 2016 )
